The world of steampunk fashion

Steampunk fashion evolved from the steampunk movement in science fiction. It largely revolves around the concept of fantasy and imagination, allowing a combination of Victorian-era fashion, elements and materials inspired by the industrial revolution of the 1800s. Steampunk is known to include designs based on a post-apocalyptic and dystopian era.

Dress modes

When we first hear the words “steam” and “punk”, what comes to mind? Black outfits, black hair, black accessories? Or maybe you associate it with machines?

You couldn’t be more wrong!

To help you choose your outfit, we have divided steampunk fashion into four basic steampunk clothing styles. These are generally considered to be consistent with certain Victorian social classes and associated professions:

  • The Tinkerer / The Inventor: As the title suggests, these were the people who were in love with science, as the public often referred to them as “mad scientists”. If we think about their clothing, we come to the conclusion that it will mainly consist of hand tools as accessories, leather belts, jackets, glasses and well-designed clothes.
  • The Street Urchin / The Chimney Sweep: These people dress in the “punkiest” styles of steampunk, indicating the lowest Victorian classes. Dirty faces, tattered clothes, old leather needles to hold the fabric together, torn stockings filthy with mud. In modern times, these clothes cost little to nothing to put together.
  • The explorer: the formal definition of an explorer is a person who explores unknown regions. The ideal image that comes to mind is a practical, tailored garment, goggles, explorer gear, tight leather vests or corsets, helmets and military gadgets and accessories.
  • The Dandy/Aesthetician: These fellows come closest to representing Victorian gentlemen and ladies. Tailored suits, cigarette cases, top hat, walking stick, elaborate dresses, handkerchiefs, cigars and brandy.
Other categorizations may include the scientist, the airship pirate, the aristocrat, the time traveler, the professor, and even the fighter

Modern world and trends

What makes steampunk so noteworthy? Not only that it dates back to the 19th century. It dates back to the 19th century, but has also been picked up by many great designers like Chanel, Dior and many more. Let’s take a look and clear any doubts you still have about the genre.

The first steampunk clothing company, “Steampunk Couture”, was founded in 2005 by Kate Lambert. Their designs include Victorian, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi and sometimes tribal-based designs.

With this fashion genre taking the world by storm, the big giants in the industry also dove in. In 2010, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Chanel and Christian Dior introduced steampunk on the runways.

In the early 2000s, the genre also found its way into the film industry. Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Warehouse 13, Golden Compass, Van Helsing, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are perfect examples of movies that incorporate steampunk ideas and fashion.

Video games like Bioshock and World of Warcraft have also inspired steampunk creativity.

Today, steampunk fashion is considered the genre that combines the pleasing aesthetics of the past with a certain form of imaginative disguise. As a result, sci-fi cosplayers and historical recreations are the two main streams of modern trends.

In 2010, steampunk fashion found its way into the high-end market. Designer John Galliano introduced elements from the genre into his spring haute couture show for Dior. Another designer who used this genre style is Jean Paul Gaultier. He is famous for his use of corsets in his collections. As of 2015, steampunk fashion has influenced more mainstream fashion trends and is attracting the attention of more designers.

This screams steampunk takeover!

Now you can see why steampunk is an important fashion genre. It has made such an impact on the world that many people now consider it synonymous with “royal wear” because of the outfit styles. Wouldn’t you want to have a beautiful outfit like that?

Male and female clothing

Steampunk fashion presents a twist and fusion of the old and new Victorian era mixed with bold looks. This contrast creates a post-apocalyptic feel while giving the familiar romantic appeal of drama and revolution.

Steampunk fashion is created from a mix of fashion trends from different historical eras. Characters from the 19th century have contributed to this fashion, including lords, soldiers, explorers. It also includes punk, contemporary street fashion, gothic, burlesque, etc. Popular Lolita fashion also borrows from steampunk fashion. The Victorian era also inspired Lolita, but is more modest and represents a more youthful, feminine expression.

Traditionally, male steampunk attire includes three-piece suits, top hats, bowler hats and walking sticks. Women wear corsets, ruffles, and evening gowns with fancy embroidery and sparkling beads. Many of the female garments would have been considered unwearable in the late 19th and 20th centuries, with rising hems, intricate corsets and decorative tights. Both sexes spiced up their outfits with popular accessories such as watches, eyeglasses, and even compasses. Brass eyeglasses and brass objects were hallmark accessories. Initially, there was little jewelry in steampunk fashion. Then, starting in 2010, jewelry made its way into the style.

Hats were most prevalent in steampunk fashion. It includes all types, including bowler hats, top hats and pirate bandanas. The headpieces were inspired by Victorian fashion.

Dunkelwolf offers countless options for men and women. We offer corsets, robes, veils, top hats, bowler hats, eye patches, bandanas, compasses, leather belts, embroidered outfits, lace dresses, rings, goggles, watches, helmets, shining armor, sword scabbards, headpieces, antique jewelry and much more.
